Starting from CloudBerry Backup 4.8 you can transfer your large data to Amazon S3 using AWS Import/Export Snowball service. As you know, AWS announced a new solution for transferring large data to Amazon S3 - using their own hardware called AWS Snowball. This is an alternative to AWS Import/Export service where you had to provide your personal hardware device and send it to the AWS center.
This topic explains how to set up AWS Snowball Import job in CloudBerry Backup. Let's get started!
Prior to start working with CloudBerry Backup you need to have AWS Snowball device already and create AWS Snowball import job targeted to your backup destination Amazon S3 bucket. Learn more how to request AWS Snowball device and create import job.
Once you created the AWS Snowball import job, connect the Snowball device to your LAN (remember an IP address - you will need it to configure the Snowball).
Now you are ready to create a backup plan: go to the Create Backup Plan Wizard by clicking Files on the toolbar and specify Amazon S3 as a destination for your backup (use "Add New Account" to add a new Amazon S3 account if needed). The destination bucket must be the same that is configured for the AWS Snowball import job.
On the Plan Name step choose the "I'd like to use AWS Import / Export feature to make initial backup" option:
Go through the next wizard's steps (Backup Mode, Advanced Options, Backup Source, Advanced Filter, Compression and Encryption, Retention Policy, Schedule, Pre/Post Actions, Notification) and specify what you need to back up and what options you want to use.
The next step will be Select Import/Export type where to choose Import/Export with Snowball option:
Then you need to specify AWS Snowball configuration:
- download and install Snowball client (it is required to initiate a data transfering to Snowball)
- select "Snowball received" option
- specify IP address of your Snowball
- File manifest (.bin file) and Unlock code can be found in AWS Import/Export Management Console
Note: "Clean up Snowball" is a specific option that may be required if you had previous data transfers on the Snowball device that you no longer need and you want to clean up the device.
Complete the wizard and run the backup plan to start the data trasferring to the Snowball. Once your initial backup has been uploaded to the Snowball, you will see the following backup plan status: Initial backup finished. Check the AWS Snowball import job status and confirm its completeness.
The next step is to send the Snowball to AWS data center and monitor the import job status. Once the import job completed, you will need to select "Import Job completed" option for your backup plan:
All further backup runs will upload only new and modified files directly to Amazon S3.
Note: AWS Snowball is currently supported for File Level backup only. Compression and encryption options will be ignored during the initial backup.
